So why didn’t we visit a distillery in Scotland? (Blame it on Robertsons!)

…because on our way to Erdradour distillery, the smallest of all distilleries, based in the tourist town of Pitlochry, we got waylaid by the incalculable whiskey knowledge of the owner of the town’s main whiskey store — Robertson’s. The tour we received was from one of the top ten experts in Scottish Whiskey, Ewan McIlwraith, who took us through dozens of different and rare whiskey’s — and ended his tour by telling us he chose his whiskey by season. (Talisker and Erdradour). We learned aobut peet, salt brine, the barrels held on piers above the North Sea, the smoke from burned casks, on and on…

Did we blow it? Yes, we passed several well known distilleries, but chose each day to put it off for nature, hikes, even an old steam engine train ride. Did we regret it? No, that is why we will go back! And the photo of our Wall of Whiskey as I called it, caused some consternation among the Customs Agent, who upon hearing how many bottles of whiskey we had, paused, shrugged and said, “It’s liquid, don’t worry about it…”

Oh, we will be back!
