Beara Way view down on Allihies.

Best of Ireland: Beara.

The Irish will praise Beara, most of which lies in County Cork on the southwestern tip of the island, as one of the most beautiful places on the Island. Given the expanse of Nature’s beauty here, that is both a great compliment and insight to the Irish tastes.

Ireland is a cascade of nature’s beauty, in so many forms. Beara is stark and raw. Another amazing detail of Ireland and one on a grand scale; it is not all green and vibrant and endless pastoral beauty. Riding the Beara Way, or walking the hills near Healy pass, Glanmore Lake, or the cliff walks outside of Allihies, the eerie, the endless horizon, and the raw, like you feel nature scraped its knee, Beara.

Allihies, colorful, and favorite Holiday home and travel van site for the Irish. It is the farthest West village in Ireland. O’Neill’s pub is great; the beach strand an d cliff walks nearby so emblematic of the area.

Healy Pass is not for the faint of heart; it is a tough, narrow drive that might unsettle anyone’s nerve…except that the panorama and the countryside is one of the best views in Ireland; the mountains, lakes, fields, sheep galore an the no-so-distant Kenmare Bay.

Dzogchen Beara Buddhist Center. It is astounding that an actual Buddhist temple sits on a high cliff, views of the mystical Skellig Michael, designed by Buddhist monks and offering so many events, classes, retreats that feed the soul. And the coffee shop has great food! Even if you just visit to sit in the mediation garden, do it. So worth it. And no, you do not have to be Buddhist!

Gleninchaquin Park is just too stunning to miss; whether waterfalls, or alpine lake or the small path that runs past an abandoned famine house…
